HC Licence Training in Perth

Roadmaster Truck Driving School provides HC Heavy Combination licence training in Perth for eligible drivers ready to move from rigid truck driving into combination vehicle work. In Western Australia, an HC class vehicle includes a prime mover attached to a single semi-trailer, or a rigid vehicle attached to a trailer with a GVM greater than 9,000 kg, subject to the applicable vehicle and licence conditions.

HC truck training is about managing the whole combination safely: coupling and uncoupling, trailer tracking, turning space, braking, mirror use, lane positioning, reversing awareness and road planning. WA HC Licence Eligibility

Before booking HC licence training in Perth, check that your licence history meets the current Western Australian requirements. You must no longer be a provisional licence holder and must have held:

  • iconA non-provisional C class car licence for at least three years; and
  • iconA non-provisional MR or HR licence for at least one year.

If you hold a current MR or HR licence, you can generally begin learning to drive an HC class vehicle without applying for a separate learner's permit, but you must follow WA learner conditions while training. Confirm your individual eligibility, medical requirements and current fees with Transport WA before booking.

What HC Heavy Combination Training Covers

Training is focused on safe control of the prime mover and trailer as one vehicle combination. Depending on your experience and the training vehicle, practical instruction may include:

  • iconCombination vehicle familiarisation and a complete pre-start inspection
  • iconCoupling and uncoupling checks, trailer connections and safety procedures
  • iconTrailer tracking, off-tracking, wide turns and safe clearance from kerbs and obstacles
  • iconMirror use, blind-spot awareness, lane positioning and following distance
  • iconBraking, speed management, intersections, roundabouts and road planning
  • iconReversing awareness, low-speed control and HC PDA preparation

The aim is to build safe and repeatable combination vehicle habits rather than to memorise a single test route. Training does not guarantee a pass; the assessment result depends on your preparation and safe driving performance. For vehicle availability and training details, contact Roadmaster.

HC Vehicle Classes and Licence Restrictions

An HC licence authorises you to drive a prime mover with an attached single semi-trailer and the other HC vehicle types specified by WA law. It also covers HR, MR, LR and C class vehicles, subject to the conditions and transmission restriction recorded on your licence.

The vehicle used for your PDA affects the transmission restriction. Passing in an automatic vehicle results in an automatic-only restriction. Passing in a synchromesh vehicle limits you to automatic or synchromesh vehicles. If you need broader manual transmission access, discuss the correct assessment vehicle and restriction pathway with Transport WA before booking. You can compare HC training with HR Road Ranger, HR Synchromesh and MC training in Perth.

An HC class licence allows you to drive a prime mover with an attached single semi-trailer and other authorised HC combinations. It also covers HR, MR, LR and C class vehicles, subject to your licence conditions and transmission restrictions.

You must no longer be provisional and must have held a C class licence for at least three years plus an MR or HR licence for at least one year. Confirm your individual eligibility with Transport WA before booking.

HC training adds trailer tracking, coupling, off-tracking, wider turns and combination vehicle space management. The level of difficulty depends on your previous driving experience, training vehicle and ability to apply safe procedures consistently.
