MC Licence Training in Perth
Roadmaster Truck Driving School offers MC Multi Combination licence training in Perth for eligible HR or HC licence holders preparing to drive larger heavy vehicle combinations. In Western Australia, an MC class vehicle is a heavy combination unit towing one or more trailers, with each trailer having a GVM greater than 9,000 kg. The exact vehicle configuration must meet the relevant WA requirements.
MC truck training develops the judgement required when several vehicle units move as one combination. Training may cover combination inspections, coupling and uncoupling, trailer tracking, off-tracking, braking, mirror use, turning space, lane positioning, reversing awareness and practical assessment preparation. Who MC Training Is For
Current HR or HC licence holders who meet the WA MC upgrade requirements
Drivers preparing for multi-trailer, linehaul or heavy combination work
Learners who need structured practice with long-vehicle tracking and space management
Drivers who understand that MC training and assessment require an approved pathway
WA MC Licence Eligibility
Before booking MC licence training in Perth, confirm your current licence history. Transport WA states that you must no longer be a provisional licence holder and must have held:
A non-provisional C class car licence for at least three years; and
An HR (Heavy Rigid) or HC (Heavy Combination) licence for at least one year.
If you hold a current HR or HC licence, you can generally begin learning to drive an MC class vehicle without applying for a separate learner's permit, subject to the WA learning conditions. Confirm your individual eligibility, medical requirements and current fees with Transport WA before booking.
What You Need Before MC Training
Current HR or HC Licence
Bring your current licence and confirm that your HR or HC class has been held for at least one year, alongside the required C class licence history.
Combination Vehicle Experience
MC training builds on HC or HR experience and adds more trailer units, longer sight lines, greater off-tracking and more complex space management.
Medical and Identity Requirements
Make sure you meet the commercial vehicle medical standards and have the identity or medical information required for the application process.
Approved Assessment Pathway
MC Practical Driving Assessments are completed through an approved registered training organisation. Confirm the provider, vehicle and booking requirements before training.
What MC Multi Combination Training Covers
MC lessons focus on the safe operation of a long, multi-unit combination. Depending on your experience and the training vehicle, practical instruction may include:
Multi Combination vehicle familiarisation and a full combination pre-start inspection
Coupling, uncoupling, trailer connections and safety checks
Trailer tracking, off-tracking, turning space and clearance from hazards
Mirror use, blind-spot awareness, lane positioning and following distance
Speed management, braking, intersections, roundabouts and road planning
Reversing awareness, low-speed control and MC PDA preparation
The aim is to develop safe and repeatable multi-combination driving habits, not to memorise a single assessment route. Training does not guarantee a pass; the result depends on your preparation and safe driving performance. For training availability and vehicle details, contact Roadmaster.
MC Vehicle Scope and Transmission Restrictions
An MC licence authorises you to drive an eligible heavy combination unit towing one or more trailers, each with a GVM greater than 9,000 kg. It also covers HC, HR, MR, LR and C class vehicles, subject to the conditions and transmission restriction recorded on your licence.
The assessment vehicle affects the transmission restriction. Passing in an automatic vehicle results in an automatic-only restriction. Passing in a synchromesh vehicle limits you to automatic or synchromesh vehicles. If you need broader manual transmission access, confirm the correct vehicle and restriction pathway with Transport WA before booking your MC assessment.
MC Learning and Practical Assessment Steps
Confirm your C, HR or HC licence history and MC eligibility.
Complete the relevant medical, identity and application requirements.
Practise combination inspections, coupling, trailer control and safe road driving.
Book and complete the MC PDA through an approved registered training organisation.
Follow Transport WA instructions to have the MC class endorsed after passing.
While learning, WA conditions include displaying L plates, observing the speed limit and not exceeding 100 km/h, maintaining a 0.00% blood alcohol concentration and being supervised by an appropriately authorised person. Read the official WA MC learning guidance for current details.
MC Drivers and National Work Diary Requirements
If you drive a vehicle or combination weighing more than 12 tonnes outside Western Australia and the Northern Territory, you may need to carry and complete a National Driver Work Diary. The requirement applies to trips more than 100 kilometres from your driver base. Check the current rules before undertaking interstate work with the Transport WA MC licence guidance.
