HR Automatic Licence Training in Perth

Looking for HR automatic licence training in Perth? Roadmaster Truck Driving School helps eligible WA drivers prepare for heavy rigid truck driving through structured vehicle familiarisation, safety checks and practical road training. An HR licence is for a heavy rigid vehicle with three or more axles and a gross vehicle mass (GVM) greater than 8,000 kg. It also covers the lower LR, MR and C vehicle classes.

Automatic heavy rigid training is suitable for learners who want to concentrate on observation, braking, steering, turning space, mirror use and safe vehicle control without changing gears manually. Your instructor can explain the training vehicle, the WA licensing process and the skills you need to practise before booking your Practical Driving Assessment (PDA). • iconA non-provisional C class car licence for at least two years
  • iconAn LR (Light Rigid) licence for at least one year

You will also need to complete the required application, identity, eyesight and heavy vehicle theory steps before your PDA. Requirements and fees may change, so confirm your eligibility with Transport WA or ask our team before booking.

What HR Automatic Truck Training Covers

The practical focus is on the habits that help a heavy vehicle driver operate safely in real traffic. Training content is adapted to your experience and the vehicle used for training, but may include:

  • iconPre-start inspection, cab controls and safety equipment checks
  • iconSmooth moving off, controlled braking and appropriate following distance
  • iconMirror routines, blind-spot awareness and safe lane positioning
  • iconWide turns, kerb clearance, low-speed manoeuvring and reversing awareness
  • iconIntersections, traffic management, hazard perception and PDA preparation

The aim is to build safe, repeatable driving habits—not simply to memorise a test route. Ask about available vehicles, lesson format, training availability and the current assessment process when you contact Roadmaster.

Automatic HR Licence Restriction

In WA, if you pass the PDA in a vehicle with an automatic transmission, your licence is issued with an automatic-transmission restriction. This means you can drive vehicles within the authorised class that have an automatic transmission, but you cannot drive a manual heavy vehicle until the relevant restriction is removed through the required assessment process. Choose automatic HR training when it matches your current vehicle access and work plans; choose a manual pathway if you need broader transmission access from the outset.

Compare your options with HR synchromesh training, HR Road Ranger training, HC training or MC training in Perth before you make a booking.

From Training to Your HR Practical Assessment

  1. iconConfirm your licence eligibility and complete the required WA application steps.
  2. iconComplete the heavy vehicle theory and eyesight requirements.
  3. iconBuild practical skills in an appropriate HR automatic training vehicle.
  4. iconBook and complete the HR Practical Driving Assessment through an approved pathway.
  5. iconHave your licence class endorsed after passing, following Transport WA instructions.

Passing a PDA is not automatic and depends on your preparation and safe driving performance on the day. For the latest assessment rules, vehicle standards and booking information, read the official WA HR practical assessment guidance.

An HR (Heavy Rigid) licence authorises you to drive a heavy rigid vehicle with three or more axles and a GVM greater than 8,000 kg. It also authorises the lower MR, LR and C vehicle classes, subject to any conditions or restrictions shown on your licence.

In WA, HR applicants must be at least 19, no longer provisional, and must have held a C class licence for at least two years, or an LR or MR licence for at least one year. Confirm your individual eligibility with Transport WA before booking.

Yes. If you pass the PDA in an automatic vehicle, WA issues the relevant heavy vehicle class with an automatic-transmission restriction. You will need to complete the required assessment in a suitable manual vehicle to remove that restriction.
